Tomato and bell pepper tolerance to preemergence herbicides applied posttransplant in plasticulture production

Abstract Preemergence (PRE) herbicides are often banded over the entire top of raised beds for broadleaf and grass control in plasticulture vegetable production systems. However, weeds may emerge from planting holes tears plastic mulch. Banded application results applied where no occur, therefore, they not needed. Our objective is to identify that do harm transplanted crops when directed at transplant after (POST) with aim reduce off-target applications. Therefore, we evaluated tomato pepper tolerance PRE 2 wk subsequent effects on crop weed density. Halosulfuron, S -metolachlor, metribuzin, pendimethalin did injure transplants, height, or yield. Fomesafen caused some injury (7%) but had effect other measured parameters Trial I. All injured peppers by ≥19%, although yield was observed. Overall, halosulfuron, can be safely significant nor final yield, none safe use crops.
